As part of the multi platform release for BOGATYRS, composer Brandon Moore (RAY BRADBURY’S CHRYSALIS, THE GENTLEMAN DON LA MANCHA) has been tapped to provide a soundtrack album for the graphic novel comprised of cues inspired by some of the story’s most compelling moments. Here are some of his thoughts on the upcoming project.
How do you plan to approach the composition of a soundtrack for a graphic novel?
As a composer who normally enjoys writing music for film I often have boundaries for scenes in regards to tempo, length, dynamics and even orchestration among other things. A graphic novel allows me to use my mind’s eye to compose scenes without restraint in length of phrasing and timing music cues out. It’s similar to composing a symphony to a program including artist’s drawings and paintings which go hand in hand to tell a story.
What have you and the writers discussed?
Roger Lay, Jr. and I have alreadye discussed the tone of the story. He has provided me with the script as well as the BOGATYRS Sketchbook — drawings of characters, creatures, maps and other elements to get a feel for the look of the project. With the story in place, we can get an idea of the darkness and excitement of the emotional ride that the music will bring to the reader.
What are your goals with the BOGATYRS soundtrack?
My goal with this soundtrack is to write an epic orchestral score with grand themes and an adventurous tone that works with the dark Russian myth that the story is based on. I grew up with scores like DRAGONSLAYER and WILLOW so this is an opportunity for me to bring a familiar feel and excitement to a fantasy adventure. There will be many themes like the main heroic BOGATYRS Theme, a love theme, as well as plenty of intense chase and battle music.
